Blanket to Burp Cloth

I haven't posted the past 2 days because I've been busy completing projects and eating us through house and home.

I'm right at 32 weeks, 4 days, and I've managed to only gain 13 lbs so far.  However, that is probably going to change with the way I've been eating everything in sight.

Seriously.  Someone come and lock my fridge.

I'm sure I had a point to this post...  Oh, yeah..  I've been turning flannel receiving blankets into these:

Flannel Burp Cloths!
They're not the prettiest things in the world.  I've seen prettier ones backed with minky, but I'm a simple gal, so simple burp cloths it is.

WARNING:  Sewing 101 here, haha.

I simply made a cardboard template of the size I wanted, traced it multiple times onto each blanket and cut out.  I pinned two of them, pretty sides together, and stitched around the edge.

Cutting off the corners allows it to lay smoothly once stitched.
About 3 inches were left unsewn, to allow flipping to right side out.

Then the open area was stitched closed.

Since I plan on washing these often, and I didn't want to have to worry about them always laying correctly at the seams, I decided to do a zigzag stitch, about a 1/2 inch in, all the way around the edges.

It's a cute little way of making sure the burp cloths always lay flat, and don't become messed up in the wash.

That's it!  Four small flannel blankets provided me with enough fabric for 10, double sided (extra absorbent) burp cloths.

  1. Ahhhh ... how precious! I can't wait to see the babe! Thirteen pounds leaves some 'wiggle' room.

  2. These are such an awesome idea! I might have to do this myself! BTW-we are only 4 days apart! I am 32 weeks today, so I definitely know what you are going through!
    Again, beautiful idea!

  4. Ohhhh great idea! I'm sure we'll get a ton of receiving blankets I can transform! I'm almost at 32 weeks and are right around your same weight gain, too!

    Thanks for the inspiration :)

  5. This is a great idea. I can't imagine putting minkee on burp cloths anyway--it seems a waste of good fabric on the wrong item! So glad I found your blog today.
